“Well it all began in the mind of a gifted child…” was the opening bar of the verse that introduced LadyTwist to the world as the quick-witted, rapid-spitting female MC from Chicago, on Vh1’s Miss Rap Supreme (a reality television series that set out to find the next great female MC).
LadyTwist's razor-sharp delivery wowed the masses; and many predicted that she would win the competition. While the show itself wasted no time taking a turn for typical drama-driven reality TV, Twist’s open refusal to feud with her cast mates made her instantly likeable. That, along with her well-developed lyricism, fueled the outrage that swept the country when she was eliminated at the end of the fourth episode. Her unexpected elimination caused a riot on the Internet, and one blog site (SOHH.com) referred to her elimination episode as “the one where the show lost all credibility”.
And while Vh1 gave Twist her first shot at mainstream popularity, the show itself failed to accurately depict the true depths of her talent. What viewers saw on Miss Rap Supreme was merely an appetizer compared to what the multi-talented performer is really capable of. For example: In addition to music, Twist is also the comic genius behind the voice of the boisterous and often barbarically malapropian character Shaquaiquai J.A.S.N. Jenkins. Shaquaiquai is best known as the “ghetto girl” with whom Twist is always exchanging insults, usually via telephone, on skits. By popular demand, these skits have become a staple on her releases.
With a devoted following and a rapidly growing fan base, LadyTwist continues to enjoy lucrative record sales and regular rotation at multiple outlets from Alaska to Germany. Her popular parodies are much anticipated and have become staples on her mixtapes. Fan favorites, such as “Crank that (Dictionary)” and “Whatever (Dollar Menu Remix)” [spin-offs of Soulja Boy and T.I. songs respectively] are guaranteed crowd-pleasers at live shows.
At 24 years old, LadyTwist has graduated from college, lost many childhood acquaintances to gang violence and has done everything from prime time television to local stand-up comedy. Therefore her first non-mixtape release, “Resuscitation”, promises to be a mature yet entertaining reminder of what Hip Hop should be: a fun yet introspective form of expression with a dash of intellect.
She heats things up with serious songs like “Money Right” & “Take Heed” then mellows the mood back out with songs like “B.S. (It’ll sell)” & the lead single “In the cut”. She lets her inner comic run amuck with 6 brand new Shaquaiquai skits and proves that she is indeed The Lyrical Storyteller on “Jack Deala”, the story of a young boy whose jaded upbringing sends him down the path of self-destruction. Long story short: “Resuscitation” is an emotional rollercoaster!
LadyTwist credits her lyrical versatility to her admiration of such lyrical greats as Lupe Fiasco, Ludacris, Eminem and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. With her quick-witted wordplay and her sometimes lightening-fast delivery, she collectively embraces the essence of them all to rhythmic perfection.
Twizzle (as she's affectionately called by fans) has a distinct and attention-grabbing style that is guaranteed to leave you laughing, impressed, empathetic and/or otherwise amused or your money back! From jaw-dropping metaphors and punch lines to hysterical skits, you'll never get bored when LadyTwist is "in the building".
