My approach was to stay as true to the original as possible - quickly realized it wasn't going to be a simple intro/drum loop. I had to sample/EQ one-shot hits (hats, snare, congo pop) from the original song so that it felt seamless during playback. The intro loop is chopped and pitch-shifted 12 semitones down. For the piano section, I layered three low-attack pianos and sent it through Gross Beat. There's also what sounds like a sweeping pad during the breaks - I didn't bother trying to scour my plugins for a similar pad so I just duplicated the intro loop, EQ'ed + distortion, then automated the volume of both the loop and the distortion - gave it a similar sweeping effect.
