“Kenneth Ishak & The Freedom Machines” is the name of Kenneth Ishaks new album, but also the name of his band. The album is a debut for the band, but Kenneth’s fourth, or ninth if you were to count his earlier work with Beezewax who counted Kenneth as their vocalist.
His previous (Spellemann prize nominated) album had clear ideas and goals which he followed, but this time he felt he dad to do the exact opposite. A song was not finished until the song said to him that it was finished. The songs and the album’s manifesto and thus the band were so named, freedom’s machines.
The album is in no way an étude in free-jazz though, rather more an exercise in relatively free but yet effective and demanding pop-rock. It also bears the hallmarks of Kenneth’s production work for other bands (Little Hands of Asphalt, Hiawata!, Death is Not Glamorous etc.) over the last few years which has helped him grow both as a producer and an arranger.
Kenneth Ishak & The Freedom Machines demand that you listen, and that you listen attentively. If you do, you and the rest of the world can join Kenneth on his journey. Joining Kenneth on this particular album project are Kristian Syvertsen (Big Bang, Howl) Per Ivar Stubbrud (the Goo Men), David Torch (Them Hills etc), Thea Glenton Raknes (Norma Sass) and Karl Wisløff (Orango)
