Wrestle Any Song to the Ground is a four-hour song analysis workshop. We blast through music fundamentals to be sure we’re all on the same page with concepts and vocabulary. Then we listen to and dissect a classic pop song, a more recent pop classic, and a current radio hit. Finally, we hear as many students’ songs as possible, listening for the same things: key, melodies, song sections, rhythm, chord progression, content, and production style. If a student would like a critique, the class and I give one, being sure to point out both strengths as well as areas that might be improved, and how to do so.
