Kawada

Kawada were formed two years ago by Michael Drummond and Jeff Beynon.



Originally, the two were discussing their UCAS application forms, and Michael suggested that they say they were "in a band". Jeff's obvious reply was "But we're not!", to which Michael reportedly retorted "You are now."



Originally, with the rock and roll lifestyle going to their heads, the two overzealous band members recruited many more members, including seven guitarists and two singers. In the end, the line-up was narrowed down to four members; Jeff, Michael, an acoustic guitarist called Harry and a drummer called Andy. The name "Kawada" is taken from the film "Battle Royale". It makes no sense, but it sounds good and it begins with a 'K'.



When university life loomed, Jeff and Michael once again found themselves to be the only remaining members of Kawada. They found this girl, Laura, who could sing, and decided that she should sing for the band. They still didn't have a drummer though. They sought help in an extremely talented percussionist by the name of "Grenno", of '86' fame. James Grenside played a couple of gigs for Kawada and generally helped them to hear what their songs sounded like with a beat. Then Michael's brother, Lee, decided to pick up some sticks and beat them against stuff, and Kawada had found themselves a dedicated drummer. Kawada still owe a lot of their little success to Grenno, whose experience, guidance and mega-drumming led them onto the gigging scene.



The current line-up has four members. Jeff Beynon is on bass, Laura Macdonald on Lead Vocals and rhythm guitar, Lee Drummond on drums and Michael Drummond on guitar. The band aims for a soft pop-rock/indie sound in its songs in an attempt to create melodic live music that an audience can relate to and enjoy. The addition of a female vocalist to the band has given them an original sound which is highlighted by the catchy, tuneful nature of their music.



In summer 2005 Kawada finished recording their first demo, 'Between the Waking and the Shade', consisting of five original tracks. The demo was recorded in Michael's home recording studio. No animals were harmed, although Finn can probably be heard barking in the background if you listen incredibly hard.

January 2006 saw Kawada headline at Liverpool's famous Cavern Club, attracting a large number of fans and winning the hearts of many on the night. Kawada went on to headline a couple of Dry Bar nights at The Cavern and The Zanzibar whilst gigging the Liverpool scene in venues like The Picket and The Slaughterhouse.

In June 2006 Kawada played to over 200 fans at an open-air concert in Croxteth Park. They have their own merchandise available at all of their gigs including t-shirts, badges and cd's.
