An autobiographical about the saints Kanaka and Purandara who led the Bhakti movement in Karnataka. Purandara was born Srinivasa Nayaka. Purandara was a Brahmin, Kanaka a shepherd by birth. The distinguishing feature of the Bhakti movement was that for the first time in India, theology was spoken in a language other than Sanskrit. It was spoken in the mother tongue of thelocal people. The Bhakti movement in Hampi was led by Vysateertha. Vyasateertha headed a monastic organisation called Vyasakoota, which conducted its debates in Sanskrit. This made it a narrowly sectarian and frequently degenerated into avid scholasticism. Another group emerged out of it - Dasakoota, which rejected considerations of caste, class and privilege. The Dasakoota members spoke in people's language, Kannada. Kanaka and Purandara belonged to Dasakoota.
