The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath Part 1
The Journey to Ngranek

This is part 1 of my Unknown Kadath suite in which Randolph Carter enters the 'Dreamlands' in search of Kadath, a city of the gods that no one seems to know where it is. Despite being warned not to search for it as the gods may have hidden it from view on purpose, he goes on his quest starting in the Enchanted Forest. He meets the 'Zoogs' - a race of sentient rodents, but as he's an experienced dreamer he communicates with them and they suggest Carter try the town of Ulthar, and speak to a priest named Atal.

The priest tells Carter of Ngranek, and hidden on one side of the mountain is a huge craving depicting the features of the gods. Carter sets off to find this carving so he may study the visage of the gods and get a clue to their lineage. If he finds a race of people that share these features he may be closer to finding Kadath.

Carter sets off but is captured by turbaned men who trade rubies for slaves and gold. These men sail black galleys that are steered by oarsmen who are never seen. They take Carter to the moon on a black galley and he learns there that the turbaned men are slaves themselves, to the terrifying moon-beasts. He's escorted across the moon by a procession of moon-beasts and slaves to be delivered to the Crawling Chaos, Nyarlathotep. The cats of Ulthar save him and slay his captors, returning Carter back to the earths Dreamlands.

From here he boards a ship to Baharna, and hears dark whispers about the night-gaunts - winged creatures that snatch people away. Carter makes the treacherous climb across Ngranek and discovers the gigantic carving of the gods on its far side. He sees that the features match those of sailors who trade at the port of Celephaïs, but before he can act on this knowledge, he is snatched away by the night-gaunts and left to die in the Vale of Pnath in the underworld...
