The Bama State Collegians were organized in the 1920s at Alabama State Teachers College (now Alabama State University) in Montgomery, Alabama. They were considered the best of the college's three dance bands, the other two being the Cavaliers and the Revellers. Starting in 1929, the Collegians were sent on the road to raise funds at a time when the college was in danger of being closed due to the Depression. A number of musicians from the Collegians later had successful careers with the large swing orchestras of the day. In addition to composer and bandleader Erskine Hawkins, these included Paul Bascomb, Dud Bascomb, Avery Parrish, Julian Dash, Reuben Phillips, and Sammy Lowe.

In 1934, Erskine Hawkins and the Collegians traveled to New York, and Hawkins played at the Apollo. In 1936, Hawkins and the band personnel left Alabama State and began recording for Vocalion.
