The Gainesville Civic Chorus Summer Singers and the University of Florida Orchestra presented October Waltz by Emily Singleton at the First United Methodist Church in Gainesville, FL
August 1, 2016
Conducted by Joshua Mazur
Composed by Emily Singleton
Dedicated to Scott E. Jackson, Luthier

Emily began writing October Waltz in October 2015, just before Scotty was diagnosed with Leukemia. She had just finished writing the October Waltz Trio and Chorale when he was admitted into the hospital. She spent her birthday that November playing for him by his bedside. He was the first person, other than her music teachers, to hear this waltz. He delighted in it and spoke countless words of encouragement to her, making her promise to continue dreaming and to pursue music to its fullest. He believed in her and looked forward to hearing more. She was inspired to add the orchestral part to the chorale the day she learned of his passing. She worked tirelessly for two days until it was finished, wishing to dedicate this waltz to Scotty. May his gift to the music community carry on.

Many thanks to Joshua Mazur and Dr. Kesling (University of Florida) for offering Summer Sing and blessing the community with engaging music. Special gratitude extended to Joshua for equipping Emily with the tools needed to write for chorus, and to Catherine Martin, Jacob Lawson, and Ismael Sandoval for reviewing the accompaniment.
