Jonny - "The more I travel, the less I like flying; the unnerving post-911 tension of airports; the stress of travelers; the 3 dollar bottles of "airport water"; the disconnectedness of people with their fellow passengers as they hurtle through the air at heights and speeds our ancestors never dreamed of; Flying over unnervingly turbulent midwest tornado cells; landing on runways that other planes have just "skidded off of" in the latest Northeast blizzard. And if one has been prone to panic attacks in the past... well, these are just the perfect conditions to bring them on. Traveling alone in these circumstances can feel deeply saddening and alienating. This year, trudging through airports in some of my darker moments, I would shake my head... "Joyless. Joyless." It became a little refrain that I would repeat to myself; at first it was a sort of self-scold for my inability to just enjoy the day; soon it became a little tune to bring me a little cheer; Eventually it formed itself into a full song.
