Hi everyone! This is my first Drum Cover video. In the past, when I first saw drummers doing drum covers on YouTube, I just didn't get it. I thought to myself- why cover a song? Shouldn't a drummer play to original music? Shouldn't he/she write their own drum part? Shouldn't they be playing with a band?? Isn't that the true art of drumming? I grew up with the mindset of drumming being original and breaking new ground. And, years ago, the recording technology didn't allow for 'after the fact' playing. And to me, why play a song exactly the way it was originally recorded (other than if the band leader/producer specifically wants it that way)? Where was the art in that? Recently, the mixing and recording software/technology has advanced enough that drummers are able to record their drums to cover tracks and actually put their own spin on them. Drummers now can play the songs with their own feel. They can change the groove, the fills and be creative. Now this is art!

I enjoy watching drummers here on YouTube playing to all different styles of covers, but I questioned whether this is something a pro player should do. This is for the kids right? So instead of playing a cover myself, I started to write and arrange original rock/pop songs myself, but never felt that the tunes were good enough to seriously record them and video them. For those of you who don't know me, I am known as more of a jazz fusion drummer. I can write that style of music just fine, but really wanted to play and record more rock music recently.

One of my favorite rock bands is a band called Switchfoot. I love their music. I go see them every time they come to NYC. They have great CDs and live shows. I would love to play with them one day, but I realize that they are a true band as well as childhood friends. So, I don't think I will be touring with them anytime soon. But I want to play and record/video their music. So, a few months back, I finally came to a decision. Why not do drum covers of their songs? Well, I gave it a try and I loved it! It was so much fun playing and recording to one of my favorite songs. I decided for my first one I would just play the song just as I felt it. Close to the original drum parts, but I added my own style and a few original grooves on the verses.

I hope you enjoy this video. It was very satisfying for me to record my drumming to one of my favorite songs. Please subscribe to my channel so you will know when I post new videos. I will be posting more drum covers as well as my usual drum solos and drum clinic footage.

Enjoy!!
John
