Piano Improvisation 1 - Scattered Thoughts - Tim Liggett - Video
PUBLISHED:  Aug 09, 2011
DESCRIPTION:
After a long break, another music update! This is my first piano improvisation (or the first I'm willing to call that, I guess Optimism/Pessimism was one too). It was originally recorded in 2010, but never managed to see the light of day on my other account, so this is its first upload. It's essentially me going through various moods over the span of about eight minutes, with a few themes that I had composed prior to the improv being thrown in the mix. There's also an underlying theme (more like a chord progression, really) that occurs throughout; I may record an expanded version of this in the future. I hope you enjoy this piece, and thanks for listening!

NOTE: What follows is a step-by-step analysis of the improvisation. There's no need to read it to listen to the piece, but it does go into further detail about it in case you're curious.

0:00 - 1:12 -- Opening progression. Slow and sad, with shifts between major and minor chords, but sitting more in the minor chords. A typical attempt of mine at sad music. Ending is a reference to "Hide and Seek" by Imogen Heap.

1:13 - 1:43 -- More movement, and more hopeful. Progressively builds to...

1:44 - 2:24 -- Panic! Some stressed out patterns with a few low octives for added tension. Slowly falls back down before becoming a bit hopeful and giving a first glimpse at an underlying theme.

2:25 - 2:57 -- Somewhat militaristic marching music. Not sure where this came from. XD Slow and methodical.

2:58 - 3:40 -- Quieter, higher movements with hints of that underlying theme coming in. Stops for an almost statement of the theme, before seguing into...

3:41 - 4:09 -- This theme. It's a pretty simplistic chord progression that I thought of a while back. I thought it might work well as a love theme for an RPG, but it's not developed/complex enough for that, in my opinion.

4:10 - 5:26 -- A new theme gets introduced. This is one of my favorites that I've composed, though again, it's simplistic. After a statement, the theme meanders around the same two chords for a while (my themes tend to do this). It concludes with a final statement of the theme, before dropping into...

5:27 - 6:24 -- My attempt at something "jazzy." Unfortunately, I seem to be under impression that as long as I lower the 5th in a minor key anything I play will come across as jazz. Yeah, I have a lot to learn about how to write jazz. I do like the chord progression that goes under the "jazzy" melody around 5:56. Concludes with another almost statement of that underlying theme, with an incorrect chord that I leads me through some dissonant chords until...

6:25 - 6:59 -- One of my favorite chord progressions! Minor i, Major III, Major IV. I do this too often, in my opinion, but I really do love the sound of it. A statement of that underlying theme, and then a new theme which becomes...

7:00 - 7:40 -- Endless repetition. XD This new melody is actually one I thought up as something of a "main theme" for an RPG idea I had, thought I don't think it really works as that, to be honest. I did love this version of it, though, with the same melody repeated as chords build (minor iv to Major VII). My playing was a bit sloppy here, sorry about that. It builds in intensity until climaxing and ending with a few echoing statements of the melody. And then the improv concludes with...

7:41 - 7:52 -- The Final Fantasy victory fanfare! Yes, I know, this was composed by Nobuo Uematsu. It's not mine, in any way, shape, or form. I do like ending pieces with it, though, as it has a great sense of closure to it. Again, this is composed by Nobuo Uematsu. All credit for it goes to him.
