The meaning of the song Discovery

I started to write Discovery in 2005 during the return to flight of the space shuttle discovery. This flight STS-114 was extremely interesting to me because of the commander was a woman. Eileen Collins commanded Discovery to the ISS in July of that year and I watched on NASA T.V. religiously. It was Discovery that made me want to write a song to mark the milestone for myself because I always wanted to be an astronaut. In some regard I felt as though I was living my dream vicariously through Eileen Collins.

I remember I was in tears during the first Shuttle Pit Maneuver. I was in tears for a few reasons. First, because Eileen Collins was preforming the maneuver as it was the first pit maneuver and it was done so by a female. Secondly, it was in the wake of the accident of the Shuttle Columbia just 29 months beforehand.

For me, it was an emotional time because it almost felt as if Discovery was saying "you better make sure I am safe to go home". Many people assume I stole the idea from the song "Sand storm" but the volume creep in the beginning with the organ of the song Discovery was written a year before Darude wrote Sand storm. I built that idea actually in 2001 and worked many melodies from the idea of bringing the volume up as sort of a "launch" to the main musical portion of the song. The launch idea was named "launch" during the writing of Discovery in 2005. As the shuttle launched so did the organ in my song.

That is the meaning behind Discovery. It took about 8 weeks to write from beginning to end. The keyboard parts were played live and in one take. The organ loop was recorded live. The cymbal crash and base drum hit are real. The synthesizer taking the song into it's final chorus was also played live. The bass guitar was generated as well as the rest of the synthesizers in the track.
