MARK de CLIVE-LOWE & IG CULTURE present DUB BASEMENT - "THRILLSEEKER"

Taken from Afronaught presents Phuturistic Dancin' MISSION ONE (2000) the first broken beat compilation to arrive on scene from the Bugz in the Attic crew's Bitasweet label. Although Bugz in the Attic produce, remix, and DJ under the name, each member has kept busy on his own and with combinations of fellow producers -- most of which have been based around the West London area that spawned the broken beat approach. All of this cross-pollinating has led to a perplexing array of 12" releases under dozens of aliases on as many labels. This particular disc is an early Bitasweet anthology, matching a handful of tracks that were released on the label along with several exclusives. The most recognizable track here is the Chateau Flight remix of Seiji's "Second Nature"; while not nearly as energizing as the dub mix that appeared on the 10" release, Chateau Flight give it a graceful touch and allow the percolating rhythm and swaying synths to hang in suspension. G Force & Seiji's drum'n'bass roots underpin "Naturally," which would be an average cut if it weren't for an assured, easygoing vocal turn from Melissa Brown (aka the voice of Afronaught's "Transcend Me"). "The Mind (The Mind Rub)," from Da One Away, is another showcase for the ever-valuable Bembe Segue, who proves once again that the scene is heavily indebted to its rotating cast of vocalists. Other strong tracks from the likes of Black Tonez, New Sector Movements, and Kudu make this one of the first stops for those looking to dip their feet into this underground phenomenon.
