A Jazz, Period. Film
Harlem based tenor saxophonist Bill Saxton joins Montrealer Al McLean in Saxton's own Jazz club, located on 133rd Street in Harlem. Saxton and McLean match harmonic wits here, and each player brings out a great performance from his counterpart. Saxton, a seasoned veteran of the New York Jazz scene, draws on his first hand presence in one of the world's great Jazz Meccas. The younger McLean's training is a generation removed, but this fact disappears in his powerful, and swinging bursts. The host of the proceedings, McLean, strikes a balance, notably delicate, between challenging Saxton, and following his lead. But to the great joy of the listener, Saxton responds to the friendly provocation with his own virtuostic burst, in turn laying the gauntlet down for McLean.
It's rare treat to hear two player so in tune, age and training are irrelevant here, we're left with simply great music.
The pair is joined by prodigious Boston bassist Jason Davis and New York pianist Bryn Roberts.
