“Cherner’s music tells a story.” (Cadence Magazine)
“A lyrical player who sounds thoughtful even when playing an uptempo piece, Jarrett Cherner clearly has a bright future… his interplay with his trio finds the three musicians often seeming to think as one.” (Scott Yanow, LA Jazz Scene)
New York based Pianist, Composer, and Educator Jarrett Cherner was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. After completing degrees in Mathematics at Tufts University (2003, Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa) and Jazz Piano Performance at the New England Conservatory of Music (2004), he returned to the west coast, establishing himself as "one of the most exciting young pianist-composers on the Bay Area scene" (Andrew Gilbert, San Jose Mercury News).
While based in San Francisco, Cherner performed with the Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, Collective West Jazz Orchestra, Travis Sullivan’s Bjorkestra, Kasey Knudsen Sextet, Fred Randolph Quintet, Terrence Brewer, Orquesta Bakan, and ran one of the city’s best weekly jazz jam sessions at Grant & Green in North Beach.
Cherner has toured nationally and internationally, performing at the Festival de Jazz Lima (Perú), San Francisco Jazz Festival (CA), San Jose Jazz Festival (CA), Fillmore Jazz Festival (CA), Sonoma Jazz Festival (CA), Cape Cod Jazz Festival (MA), LI Winterfest (NY), and venues such as JazzZone (Lima, Perú), Jamboree (Barcelona, Spain), Smalls (NYC), Zinc Bar (NYC), Ryles Jazz Club (Cambridge, MA), Jordan Hall (Boston, MA), & Yoshi’s (Oakland, CA).
Cherner released his first album, Burgeoning, in 2005, receiving an honorable mention from the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Awards.
Cherner is currently pursuing a master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City where he studies with Jason Moran. Previous teachers have included Danilo Pérez & Jerry Bergonzi.
As an educator, Cherner has been on the faculty at the New York Jazz Academy, San Jose Summer Jazz Workshop, Jazzschool’s Summer Youth Program, Music Maker School, Talented and Gifted Hispanic summer program at UMass Boston, and Summerbridge San Francisco in addition to maintaining a private studio.
