Sushi! Roti! Reibekuchen! Brian Eno, J. Peter Schwalm, Holger Czukay & Slop Shop 1998 - Video

DESCRIPTION:
This was sourced from a RealVideo stream. Drone begins around 15:00, music kicks off around 27:12. Before that there is a visit to the installation at around 5:20. Sushi! Roti! Reibekuchen! was an event held at the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle (KAH) in Bonn, Germany, on 27 August 1998, to mark the opening of Eno's "Future Light-Lounge Proposal" installation at the KAH.

Context: for many years, Eno had been extremely reluctant to perform music in public. Singing "Miss Sarajevo" with U2 as Passengers at the 1995 "Pavarotti and Friends" concert in Modena had been a rare exception, but one that may have influenced Eno's future thinking - he could enjoy participating as part of a group, so long as he was not the "front man" or sole focus of attention. This is merely one interpretation of events, and some of the University's students will quibble that Eno had no such reservations when it came to giving talks and lectures throughout the period that he did not perform music live.

For this rare musical event, Eno was part of an ensemble that included Holger Czukay and Slop Shop, the group headed up by J. Peter Schwalm with Raoul Walton on bass and Jem Atai on drums. The intention was not to give a performance so much as to provide background music for the chefs and diners at the opening. This is why there does not appear to be much happening for the first 20+ minutes of the video. The University's archivist has trimmed this sequence - in the live broadcast, this originally ran for around 50 minutes - but it is hoped that we have retained enough of the chefs' activities to illustrate the comments made by Eno when he is interviewed at 1:46:40. Holger Czukay is also interviewed at 1:51:35.

The event was streamed live using RealVideo streaming technology, which was designed to provide high quality video and audio over the slow dial-up Internet connections and 14.4/28.8/56 kbps modems that were in existence in 1998. This explains the pixel clumping effects that make up the video images, and the somewhat tinny audio. As the KAH's link no longer works, and many people do not have the software to play Real videos anyway, the University has preserved the file for a YouTube audience.

This musical event was followed by a second set which was not webcast.

Remixed extracts from this event were included in the track "So Nah" on the Slop Shop album "Macrodelia 2". J. Peter Schwalm also has some pieces from the event on SoundCloud here: https://soundcloud.com/jpeterschwalm/eno-schwalm-czukay-kah-bonn and here: https://soundcloud.com/jpeterschwalm/eno-schwalm-czukay-1998-kah

Eno would go on to perform at several concerts as part of an ensemble with J. Peter Schwalm following the release of "Drawn From Life" in 2001.
