"They washed their hands white with house paint when the water did no good,
It ran down and soaked their shirts at the elbow
It made a thick, sticky seal like a dirty wound would,
And the rain pooled in the hollow of his shoulder
Watch it flash like a hook in the water,
Watch it flash like a noise, like a noise
Watch it catch like a nail in the hardwood,
Watch it flash like the Fourth of July.

Oiled as engines and china marker black,
He had a smile like a pinstripe with his hair pulled back
It made a hole in the subfloor,
This story's done for -- there's nothing left to tell here anymore
We haul it away in armloads
We go through windows like the door's closed
And we're buying up neckties like it's going out of style.

Watch it flash like a hook in the footlights
Watch it flash like a last night in town
Take a hand, pull it back like a curtain
Watch the walls come a-tumblin' down."
