Al McLean - Tenor Saxophone
Jaleel Shaw - Alto Saxophone
Bryn Roberts - Piano
Jason Davis - Bass

Montreal based saxophonist Al McLean joins New York alto master Jaleel Shaw on Monk's 'Bemsha Swing'. Shaw's solo is vibrant, combining angular modern phrasing with a soulful, deep reaching growl. The combination that sets him way apart from his young contemporaries; we hear shades of Sonny Stitt and Leo Wright in Shaw's voice, but the young virtuoso stands definitively alone, offering a meticulous and care-wrought view of things.

McLean dives in with typical ferocity, and replies almost conversationally to Shaw's offering. Although rooted in the Coltrane school, Al McLean runs at his own frenetic clip, infusing a broad range of influences from Lester Young, to Dexter Gordon, to Gene Ammonds.

Both musicians are playing on early prototypes of the ARC brand saxophones, a contemporary manufacturer that is producing some of the finest hand made saxophones available.
