Endurance (Gallows Pole) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Dec 28, 2011
DESCRIPTION:
Richard L. Matteson Jr. plays Nathan Hicks' dulcimer made in early 1930s. backed by his neice,Kara Pleasants- vocals, and nephew Zach Matteson- fiddle. Recorded by Bob Hitchcock in December 2011. This is the first recording of this ballad fragment.

Recording "G Major" (a little sharp) one part, based loosely on sheet music F major. Whether this is a ballad is conjecture since there's not much of a story here. The 3rd and 4th verses however are related to the "Gallows Pole" Child 95 and it could be considered a related version. It was taken from the manuscript book of Maurice Matteson who collected it from Nathan Hicks circa 1935. The title, which is similar to shape-note titles, was likely supplied by Maurice Matteson. Published by Richard L. Matteson Jr. in his "Appalachian Folk Songs for Piano and Voice" Mel Bay, 1996.

Hicks from Sugar Grove, NC was Frank Proffitt's father-in-law. The Hick's and Harmon families are well known for their songs, ballads and jack-tales.
