Erik Deutsch is Leftover's new keys player, hippy bearded frontman Vince Herman told Dgold at Homegrown. "His last name rhymes with mine. Get it?" (Answer coming later in this story, so think about it and try to answer this riddle yourself before reading on.) Erik's past music credits include playing keyboards with Citizen Cope, Norah Jones, Shooter Jennings, Charlie Hunter, and his "Outlaw Jazz" project with his brother. Get the album. Leftover Salmon asked Erik to join the band about 6 to 8 months ago, as the group continues touring extensively around North America (from Mexico to Alaska and many places in between). Homegrown Festival was Leftover's first appearance with Erik on keys in Arkansas, the band having last performed in the state as a 5-piece one year prior at Hillberry 2 Festival in Eureka Springs. Erik's reputation for Outlaw Jazz describes his style on piano, as well as his fit with LOS. It's so much fun, it oughta be illegal. He plays into Leftover's polyethnic slamgrass genres by turns of exploratory psychedelia (including a keys-drums-bass interlude not unlike Grateful Dead's Drumz Space), rollicking barrelhouse runs, jazz-inflected chords, and power rock organ tones, with occasional hints of fast-fingered barroom bluegrass. Coming to the hot seat after the departure of Little Feat keyboard legend Bill Payne (who was an official member of Leftover Salmon on their "High Country" album from 2014 and surrounding tours, and left LOS in 2015 to play for The Doobie Brothers), Erik brings a younger viewpoint and New York City-living mix of influences, veering LOS slightly away from classic rock and boogie woogie, going deeper into psychedelic, jamband and jazz X bluegrass. Is anyone still waiting for the answer to that rhyming riddle? // Spoiler Alert // Dgold guessed the answer and Vinny confirmed it on the spot. Deutsch means German which rhymes with Vince Herman! Let's welcome Erik to the Leftover Salmon collective, and mark another new era of what Dgold likes to call "Leftover Salmon Forever".
