135. Gallant Murray (Traditional Scottish) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Sep 28, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
Also called Atholl Highlanders and Athole Gathering, this song is in praise of Lord George Murray, a commander of the 1745 Rising and son of the Duke of Atholl. He died a prisoner in the Tower of London. There were Murrays on both sides of the rebellion - two regiments served on the British side at Culloden and one on the Scottish.

I learned it from the Battlefield Band.

While enjoyable to sing, it is rich in mondegreens and ambiguous dialect. For example, I can't tell if the next to last line is "scour the dark" (search the night for the enemy) or "scour the dirk" (clean your boot-knife before battle). Either could work!
