In the year 2001, Eugene natives Kyle Neuberger and Darrell "D" Jolliff decided to form a band that would take over the local music scene. Influenced by local bands like Jollymon, TV:616 and Floater and national acts Korn, the Deftones and Tool, they envisioned a band that took all the acid elements of music that surrounded the local scene and give it a harder edge. They were lacking a vocalist, so they decided to put up many flyers advertising their band and outlining the specifics they were looking for. Jonny Hanson had moved from Minnesota to Eugene on a dream, hoping to find a band he would fit into. The scene in Minnesota didn't quite fit his sound, and after listening to the lyrics of a Sublime song, he decided to pack his things and move to Oregon. After meandering through a Guitar Center, he stumbled across Kyle and D's flyer, and immediately decided to call up. Within 30 minutes of his audition, a core version of Grynch had been formed. After their first show ever on April 20th, 2002, Grynch planned show after show in the local area, playing the Brick House in Springfield and the Samurai Duck and Black Forest in Eugene. After a change of drummers, Grynch started to branch out around Oregon, playing places like the Meow Meow in Portland (now known as the Loveland) and Sandmaster Park in Florence. After playing a show with drummer Tobby Lugo's band in his hometown of Roseburg, Tobby decided to move to Eugene in hopes of getting his band more recognized. In the span of his move north, Grynch parted ways with their old drummer and were now in the market for somebody new who could help mold and shape their already dynamic music. Tobby, who originally played for speed and thrash metal bands, decided to call Grynch up and try out. Only 30 minutes into his first jam session with Grynch, just like Jonny, the decision had been made, and Grynch became what it is today.
When you come to a Grynch show, there is a multitude of things that you can expect. Onstage, prepare to see a high energy stage presence that demands the attention of everybody in the room, along with heavy, chunky riffs interweaved with soft, trippy interludes, a rolling, steady bass line, and a very consistant and persistant drumline. Offstage, you can expect to find each member of Grynch conversing with the crowd and just having fun interacting with fans and friends. Their first full length album, a live performance dubbed "Untytled", was released in 2005, and, as of May 18th, they are prepared to release their second full-length, their first "in studio" album with Central Node Productions, "Two Minutes Before, Two Minutes After", produced by Matthew Feltes, after being signed to Rommi Records. The album is named after their pre- and post-show rituals of connecting with the other members to guarantee their best performance. Constantly played on radio stations 101.5 KFLY, 97.9 KNRQ, 88.1 KWVA, 89.7 KLCC, Grynch is coming off of a McDonald Theater show, their third with Floater, fourth in the span of 12 months, where they stripped themselves of their heavy elements and performed an acoustic show after one month of practice. They have spanned the entire West Coast from Couer 'd Alene, Idaho, Seattle, Washington, Los Angeles, California, and Lake Havasu, Arizona. They have had the honor of playing with national acts Vanilla Ice, Flaw, Marc Rizzo (Ill Nino & Soulfly), Rooney, Earshot, Fishbone, the Cherry Poppin Daddies, the Rock and Roll Soldiers, Lennon Murphy, Shannon Curfman, and local acts Mark Alan, Floater, Quandry, Channel, Red With Envy, Domeshots, Falling Closer, Northwest Royale, SYX, Kapuda, Forrestal's Fall, Selah P.R., Kaddisfly, Ding Mao, Mercy Fall, DFive9, TV:616 and so many others. Grynch has also aquired critical praises at regional Battle of the Bands. They won First Place in the Splint Media Battle of the Bands in Eugene in January of 2003, as well as First Place in round one of the Sugarlight Productions Battle of the Bands in Portland the same year. They backed that up with a Second Place in the finals of the Sugarlight Productions Battle of the Bands a few months later. The five piece then took Third Place in the University of Oregon Culture Forum's Eugene Battle of the Bands held in March of 2004, followed by a Fourth Place at the Sandmaster Jam 2004 Battle of the Bands in Florence. Grynch recently took First in a prestigous Battle of the Bands, featuring premier bands from the Northwest at The New Stars Caberet in Salem, Oregon.
