Juan and Federico Longoria, inspired by the musical influences of their father Juan Longoria and their uncles, “Los Halcones Del Valle” formed their own musical group, “Los Potrillos,” in 1998.
Under the direction of Juan Longoria, Jr. and Federico Longoria as “Los Potrillos” for the past ten years, this unique and innovative musical group has created a fan base in the Rio Grande Valley and South Texas with its signature sound and its musical capacity.
Not only have its fans continuously supported the music of Los Potrillos, but several organizations have recognized the group for its ability to captivate audiences. In 2002, Los Potrillos was named “Best Conjunto of South Texas” by the South Texas Talent Commission. Also in 2002, the band was named “Young Conjunto of the Year” by the South Texas Conjunto Association. In 2003, Los Potrillos placed 2nd in the “Guerra Grupera” competition held by EMI Latin and KGBT 98.5 in Mercedes, Texas. In 2005, Los Potrillos were named Grand Champion at the “Battle of the Bands” competition held by 3RL Productions. In 2007, the band took 1st place at the 6th Annual Talent Showcase held by the Tejano Academy of Fine Arts in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Juan and Federico have also been recognized by the musical community. Juan was named the 1st place winner at “The Big Squeeze” accordion competition held by the Texas Folklife Commission in Houston, Texas in June 2007. Federico was recognized as a guest bajo- sexto recording artist on Siggno’s CD entitled, “Amor y Dolor.”
But now comes a new and exciting sound unique to Brownsville, Texas and the Rio Grande Valley. With the intent to distinguish a revolutionary mix of music, Los Potrillos has evolved to “La Nueva Esencia Musical: Grupo Conteño.”
The fundamental characteristics that distinguish the unique sound of Conteño are not only the harmonious balance of styles of Regional Mexican music including Conjunto, Tejano and Norteño, but the emotion and message that is expressed in the music itself. These unique characteristics have created a faithful fan base in the Rio Grande Valley.
The release of Conteño’s debut album, “Soltando Las Riendas” by Long Records in November 2008 and the release of their first single, “Como un Sueño” is a testament to this new sound and new era of Regional Mexican music. Conteño’s signature sound is an explosion of upbeat rhythms and sounds.

No sólo sus seguidores han apoyado continuamente la música de Los Potrillos, pero varias organizaciones han reconocido al grupo por su capacidad de captivar a audiencias. La comunidad musical ha reconocido a Juan y a Federico también. Nombraron a Juan el ganador del 1r lugar en la competición del acordión “The Big Squeeze” celebrada por el Texas Folklife Commission en Houston, Texas en Junio de 2007. Reconocieron a Federico como artista invitado de la grabación del bajo-sexto en el CD de Siggno titulado, “Amor y Dolor.”
Pero ahora viene un sonido único, nuevo y emocionante a Brownsville, Texas y al valle de Río Grande. Con el intento para distinguir una mezcla revolucionaria de la música, Los Potrillos ha desarrollado como “La Nueva Esencia Musical: Grupo Conteño.”
Las características fundamentales que distinguen el sonido único de Conteño son no sólo el equilibrio armonioso de estilos de la música Mexicana Regional incluyendo Conjunto, Tejano y Norteño, pero la emoción y el mensaje que se expresa en la música sí mismo.
Estas características únicas han creado una base fiel de seguidores en el Valle de Río Grande.
El lanzamiento del álbum principio de Conteño, “Soltando Las Riendas” por Long Records en Noviembre de 2008 y del lanzamiento de su primer sencillo, “Como un Sueño” es un testamento a este nuevo sonido y nueva era de la música Mexicana Regional. El sonido de Conteño es una explosión de los ritmos y de los sonidos distinguidos.
