Where to begin... This is the song that made me fall in love with drumming and made me realize I want to be a drummer. I was 14 years old when I first heard this masterpiece. I remember having goose bumps for days after I heard Danny Carey's epic drum solo at the end. Anyway, I thought I'd challenge myself to learn The Grudge and play it the way Danny Carey plays it. I feel like my hand and foot coordination and my overall drumming has improved tremendously from learning and playing this song. It wasn't easy, but that's the point. That's what it takes to improve your skills and become better and better at anything you want to achieve.

Tool is the one band where I don't like adding my own fills and style. Their songs are so complex and well written in such a way that I feel if you change it too much, it just doesn't sound right. So I like to stay true to the way Danny Carey wrote the drums. I did however change the way some parts a played. For example the bass drum speed ups. Instead of just speeding up my right foot, I decided to alternate between my right and left feet. So the pattern is R L, RR LL, RRR LLL, RRLL RRLL, RLRLRLRL RLRLRLRL. It made it more challenging to play and was a fun way to learn. (And who knows, maybe that is the way he plays it?)

I did all the audio mixing and video editing which was also a huge learning experience. Not to mention The Grudge clocks in at 8 minutes 36 seconds so it took a lot longer to mix and edit. Tried out some new lighting that I think looks better than in my past videos. This is also the first drum cover using Logic Pro X. I really pushed myself in all aspects of this drum cover and I hope you guys enjoy it! I hope I did this song justice. Like all of my drum covers, this was captured in one take and I'm very happy to be able to say that. Towards the end of this song, your hands and wrists are hating life but I made it through!
