This sad, evocative song, performed beautifully by Welsh contralto Iris Williams, is from a little-known musical called 'Stan and Babe', and with a title like that it seems possible that it was about Laurel and Hardy (Laurel was of course Stan, and Hardy's nickname was Babe). The song appeared as the B-side to Iris's late-1970s chart single 'He Was Beautiful (Cavatina)', from the film 'The Deer Hunter'.
