One of the standout tracks from Nirvana's debut album Bleach, "About a Girl" had to wait until the release of Nirvana's MTV unplugged album to gain international recognition.

In this About a Girl guitar lesson, I am going to show you how to play the original electric guitar version of this now classic song by the most important band of the grunge era.

Apparently, "About a Girl" was written by Kurt Cobain after an afternoon of listening to nothing but Meet The Beatles! Cobain was a HUGE Beatles fan and their pop sensibilities are highly apparent throughout most of Nirvana's music.

Kurt Cobain was able to successfully combine the strong melodic pop craft of the Beatles, and add a huge punk rock element to it. The results of this changed the history of music forever.

As for the song itself, "About a Girl" starts off with just a simple E minor and G major chord progression. He is using a clean tone guitar here and unlike many Nirvana songs, he keeps the tone relatively clean throughout most of the first half of the song.

Nothing really challenging with these chords. I think "About a Girl" would even be a great song for a beginning guitarist to learn. The whole thing consists of only basic open position chords and power chords.

We also have a cool little solo to take a look at as well. Again, this solo is quite simple and can be learned by just about any level of guitarist.

So have fun with this Nirvana classic!
