Internationally renowned and multi-award-winning flautist Gareth McLearnon left his native Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1999 to attend the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. While still a second year undergraduate student, Gareth was invited to record a track for the CD Songs for Alexander with the World famous flautist Sir James Galway and harpist Marisa Robles.

After graduation, Gareth was awarded the prestigious Ian Fleming Award from the Musicians Benevolent Fund, and a Countess of Munster Musical Trust Award. Following a year of postgraduate study, he was awarded a principal flute position in Southbank Sinfonia for their 2005 season.

As a performer, Gareth is in demand as a soloist, recording artist, orchestral, chamber and pit musician. He has given many hundreds of performances across four continents, and has led masterclasses and education events for well over two thousand young flute players both as a featured artist in his own right, and through his work with the Children's Flute Playing Charity, Flutewise.

In June 2013 Gareth was appointed as the Flute Tutor at the Yuri Bashmet International Music Academy in Samara, Russia. Further engagements all over Russia have followed on from this academy including masterclasses in Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg and Kazan and a concerto appearance at the Yaroslavl Festival with the Moscow Soloists conducted by Maestro Bashmet himself.

Gareth has been principal flute of The Heritage Orchestra since 2009 - playing concerts all over the UK and Europe including an arena tour with Tim Minchin in 2011, and a BBC Proms performance with Jamie Cullum in 2010. A regular in the pit orchestras of London's West End, he has played in numerous shows including Wicked, The Lion King, The Wizard of Oz, Love Never Dies, The Beautiful Game, Oliver! and The Lord of the Rings.

Gareth has worked with the Concordia Foundation since 2003. He has been an International Artist Ambassador with Concordia since 2008, performing concerts, including solo concertos, and giving masterclasses all over the World, including trips to Shanghai, Monaco, Nairobi and Siena. Gareth has also given solo recital performances for Irish Heritage.

Flautissimo (the Southampton Flute Orchestra) is a friendly and enthusiastic group of flautists of all ages that meets weekly during term time. The flute choir perform around five concerts a year in a variety of settings -- from Winchester Cathedral's Christmas Market and carols at Hedge End to more formal concerts with other groups at the venues such as Turner Sims and Romsey Abbey. As well as local performances, the group regularly perform at the BFS International Conventions, and have recently toured Edinburgh, Cornwall, and Dublin. If you enjoy playing the flute, learning about the flute or talking about the flute then Flautissimo is the place for you! New flautists are always wanted, anyone of Grade 5 standard or above is warmly welcome to join Flautissimo.

To enable us to provide opportunities for ensemble playing for all local flautists, all other local flute players of any age or standard are encouraged to join Piccolissimo, our introductory flute choir for less experienced flautists.

Flautissimo is a member of the Southampton Music Hub
