Welcome to Vamps, Jams and Improvisation! I'll be introducing you to dozens of approaches for developing solid melodic and rhythmic ideas for soloing or comping over one and two-chord vamps. We'll focus first on learning how to think melodically and then how to best express those ideas, in a vamp or jam setting, with the other band members.

The course is presented across ten grooves, all of which are broken up into basic and advanced rhythm concepts and then basic and advanced solo parts. It's important for you to follow the sequence, always starting with and then getting a grip on the comping lessons before digging in to the soloing sections.

IMPORTANT! Use the jam tracks frequently to apply each new concept in context!

We start the course with a laid back D minor 7th groove. I introduce D minor 7th inversions on the 1st and 2nd sets of 4 strings and then introduce a couple of different rhythmic patterns including the famous Doobie Brothers' Long Train Runnin' rhythm part. We play each note in the chord so as to play the chord cleanly and learn how to muffle the notes using the palm of our picking hand in the style of the Police. We also discuss ways to listen in and connect with the other players in the rhythm section and ways to listen in to support the soloist.
