Gabriel Fauré was commissioned by the celebrated actress Mrs. Patrick Campbell to write the incidental music for the London premiere of Pelléas et Mélisande in April of 1898. The drama by Maurice Maeterlinck influenced a number of musicians at the turn of the twentieth-century. In fact, when Mrs. Campbell first asked Debussy for an incidental score, he turned down the offer, since he was working on his own opera, also based on Pelléas.
