DESCRIPTION:
[Industriousness with Menacing Overtones] Three levels/varieties of orchestral tension. A camera literally "flies" through the streets of 1939 Japan and into the busy markets and active plazas, suggesting light tension & bustle with growing marcato strings, pulsing timpani, glockenspiel, and brass/winds - all building in tenor. There's a climax @1:06, when the camera enters a busy factory and the music reflects this industriousness with soaring strings and brass, suggesting pride and positive energy. But the mood suddenly changes as a chime gliss @1:36 brings us to a Bernard Hermann-esque, dissonant, plodding, brass-heavy sinister feel as the camera reveals what the workers are making: a harbor full of warships.
