The Schumann Resonance, also known as the Earth's Heartbeat - it's electromagnetic pulses - has a deep, meditative, healing effect on the mind and body.*

Known effects of listening to binaural beats such as the Schumann Resonance are: Developing higher states of consciousness, releasing stress, a relaxed alertness, calmness, improved physical health, mood elevation, relief from anxiety and depression, and increased mental abilities. It has also been used as an aid to meditation.

Binaural beats are an auditory response produced by the brain's reaction to audio signals of nearly similar wavelengths played into the left and right ears (stereo stimulus of different tones). The brain integrates the two sounds to produce a sensation (it is not an audio signal per se) called the binaural beat.

As an example, playing a sound with an 80Hz frequency in the left ear and a 90Hz signal in the right ear causes the brain to sense a binaural beat with a frequency of 10Hz. Your brain waves will then shift to match or follow that binaural beat of 10Hz.

Each stage of consciousness has a corresponding brain wave activity:

Beta (13-26 Hz) Alert concentration and problem-solving
Alpha (8-13 Hz) Alert relaxation
Theta (4-7 Hz) Deep relaxation and increased learning
Delta (1-3 Hz) Deep sleep

The work of the physicist Heinrich Wilhelm Dove led to the discovery of binaural beats in 1839. Studies over the years have led to further discoveries and the use of the binaural effects in alternative medicine, relaxation and meditation.

Initially discounted as non scientific observations, the work of Gerard Oster in 1973 led to the consideration of binaural beats a useful medical diagnostic tool. Studies continued since then and their impact on the brain and other systems are now better understood. Binaural beats have been shown in studies to alter the state of the brain waves.

As mentioned earlier in the article each waking state has a brain wave frequency associated with it, as does your brain when you are depressed or stressed. Listening to specially created music or sounds which are designed to force your brain to create a resonance of a certain frequency, can cause your brain to shift from one state into another. Generally speaking, binaural beats and isochronic tones will have the impact of lifting you from a stressed state into a more relaxed state.

Studies have shown that binaural beats, when listened to with headphones, can do the following:

Stress and anxiety reduction
Pain relief, from menstrual pain to backache
Mood elevation
Aiding meditation
Alleviating symptoms of depression
Alleviating symptoms of anxiety
General wellbeing and happiness

Are there any side effects to using binaural beats?

It is worth mentioning that binaural beats will not work exactly the same way for everyone. This is because of the complex structure of our individual brains. People often ask if there are any downsides to using something which alters the way our brain works and that is a very good question. Binaural music is often accompanied with warnings to consult your doctor before using. This is because some doctors believe there is a possibility of binaural beats triggering seizures if you suffer from epilepsy.

There are also concerns for people fitted with pacemakers as it is believed binaural beats, in addition to modifying brain waves could have an effect on heart rate too. A lot of work is still ongoing in these areas.

For the majority of people though, binaural beats represents an alternative solution to a modern stress-filled life—relaxation, treatment for depression and anxiety, and general health and well being. If you are searching for newer ways to relax and unwind, you might want to consider trying binaural music.

The Schumann resonances (SR) are a set of spectrum peaks in the extremely low frequency (ELF) portion of the Earth's electromagnetic field spectrum. Schumann resonances are global electromagnetic resonances, excited by lightning discharges in the cavity formed by the Earth's surface and the ionosphere.)
