Moving Gaza - Exit Clov @ Vancouver TAIWANfest (研科台灣文化節) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Sep 04, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
Exit Clov, a five-piece indie rock band from Washington, DC whose sound is often described as "kaleidoscopic pop noir", performs 'Moving Gaza' from their 2006 album 'Respond, Respond' at the 2012 Telus TAIWANfest (研科台灣文化節) in the Vancouver Art Gallery plaza in Vancouver, BC, Canada on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012.

The group features Taiwanese-American twin sisters Emily Hsu (vocals, keyboard, violin) and Susan Hsu (vocals, guitar, violin) along with Aaron Leeder (guitar), Brett Niederman (bass), and John Thayer (drums). The band's name is derived from Samuel Beckett's Endgame, although they admit that it was the only work of Beckett's that they had read at the time they selected the name.

Since forming in 2003 they have put out several EPs including their first two, which were self-released. In 2006 Jolly Roget Sessions was created with the help of producer Roger Greenawalt (No Doubt, Ben Kweller, Iggy Pop and Ric Ocasek). Their album titled "Island X" is based on Taiwanese folk songs Hsu sisters' grandmother shared with them during childhood. Earlier this year, Exit Clov performed at the "Spring Scream" festival in Taiwan and made a sensation in later appearances at some underworld venues.

Exit Clov has performed with a number of bands and artists, including Dr. Dog, Kanye West, Architecture in Helsinki, Animal Liberation Orchestra, Jukebox The Ghost, Cloud Cult, Razorlight and Tea Leaf Green.

The band has toured the United States playing such festivals as South by Southwest (SXSW) and the All Good Music Festival. They continue to tour the U.S., mostly performing in northeastern venues like the 9:30 Club in Washington, Bowery Ballroom in New York City, Middle East in Boston and their unofficial home stage in DC, The Black Cat.

Lyrics of the song 'Moving Gaza':

Music it feels like
Two doves flying shimmy over Israel
The day is otherwise
I'm a poor girl living off of chamomile
I know I can't get by
A dollar short for my metro ride
Living's not for free art is ecstasy
But I don't really care

Purple blaze is like my favorite song
When it plays it gets me all nite long
Track the days to get the soundtrack to
What it takes to get from me to you

Free is the word right out of Lebanon
In '82 they kicked the Jews back to Israel
Forget it, it's over now
I'm a poor girl wanna make the music real
