Five Ancient Odes on poems by Sappho.
Translation Lionel Salter
IV. He here not blessed
with the Muses' rosy spirit
lies lifeless in days to come,
stirred by no memories,
called back by no yearning wish;
he flies down into Hades ingloriously,
and wanders blindly there
among the throng
of the sightless dead.
But never does a lament rightly sound in the house
where the Muses prevail; that is not fitting for us.
My mind always, immutably,
revolves round the beautiful.
Thus shall I still be remembered in later times.
