Elmore Judd, Samba Apocalypse 2000

by Anthony Tognazzini

Elmore Judd is the brainchild of keyboardist/singer/songwriter Jesse Hackett and his band of cohorts, all of whom possess the same devotion to grooves and genre-mixing. Based in London, and clearly familiar with that city's sleek club music scene, Elmore Judd also draws influence from 1970s art rock a la David Bowie and Roxy Music, '60s R&B, '80s underground dance music, funk, electronica, world music, et al. From the heady dancefloor filler, "Tron Song," to the creepily atmospheric "Rats," INSECT FUNK, their debut, presents a fresh, danceable new sound
