Matthew Mancillas - "Contemporary Bestiary" for soprano, flute, clarinet and piano (VIDEO REQUEST) - Video
PUBLISHED:  May 22, 2017
DESCRIPTION:
The earliest sketches of Contemporary Bestiary were composed in the late months of 2015, after receiving the poet’s permission to use the text and wouldn’t be completed until the summer of 2016. The poems were taken from Vasilina Orlova’s book of the same title. The instrumentation was very loosely inspired by a conversation on Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire and my own listening of Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time, as neither of these works use the full ensemble at all times. The piece is constructed using a modified whole-tone scale. A short set of songs, these are intended to be performed only as a whole.
