This song, also known as "Girl from the North Country" was first released as the second track on Dylan's second studio album, "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" (1963). Dylan re-recorded the song as a duet with Johnny Cash in 1969 and made it the first track on "Nashville Skyline", his ninth studio album.

The song was written after his first trip to England in 1962. There has been some speculation about who the girl is based on, with former girlfriends, Echo Helstrom and Bonnie Beecher, as possible contenders, though it could also be his then girlfriend, Suze Rotolo, who had moved to Italy to continue her studies. Though Dylan went to Italy in search of her, she had actually returned to the United States, where Dylan eventually persuaded her to get back together with him. Suze seems the most likely candidate as she is the woman featured on the album cover, walking with Dylan in a street near their apartment.

In London, Dylan met several folksingers, including Martin Carthy, who introduced him to several traditional English songs, including Carthy's own arrangement of "Scarborough Fair", on which Dylan partly based the melody and lyrics of "Girl from the North Country," including the line "Remember me to one who lives there / She once was a true love of mine". A year later he reworked this song as "Boots of Spanish Leather", which was recorded for the album, "The Times They Are a-Changin'".

The song has been recorded by many artists, including Johnny Cash and Joni Mitchell, Waylon Jennings, Joe Cocker and Leon Russell (1970), Rod Stewart (1974), Sting and Counting Crows (2012).

Lyrics and chords:
Em ........ D7 ................. G
If you're travelin' in the north country fair,
Em ............ D7 .......... G
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline,
...... Em ................. C ...................... G
Remember me to one who lives there.
Em ........... D7 ......................... G
She once was a true love of mine.

Well, if you go when the snowflakes storm,
When the rivers freeze and summer ends,
Please see if she's wearing a coat so warm,
To keep her from the howlin' winds.

Please see for me if her hair hangs long,
If it rolls and flows all down her breast.
Please see for me if her hair hangs long,
That's the way I remember her best.

I'm a-wonderin' if she remembers me at all.
Many times I've often prayed
In the darkness of my night,
In the brightness of my day.

So if you're travelin' in the north country fair,
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline,
Remember me to one who lives there.
She once was a true love of mine.
