(3/3) My name is Ewan Cunningham, I'm 18 years old and I'm a self taught musician. I started playing drums at the age of 4 and now I'm branching out into other instruments such as guitar, bass, keyboards and vocals. I've been teaching myself to mix, record and film music since I was 10 years old and this is my passion.

Well here it is... The final one of my Dobbie Hall videos and my full length cover of Echoes. I chose to cover Echoes because I knew it would be a challenge. Not just a challenge to learn every instrumental part to this 25 minute masterpiece but to also make it sound right and true to the vibe and feel of the Live at Pompeii version.

The very first thing I did when recording this was learn the piano sequence at the very beginning. I don't have a grand piano or a Hammond organ so to get the right keyboard sound was gonna take a lot of tweaking with effects. I used my cheap Yamaha keyboard for all of the keyboard parts (of which there are a lot) and I am very happy with the sound I managed to pull from such a limited instrument. Once I had gotten most of the piano and organ tracks done I started working on the guitar part. I had never practiced the slide/violin effect that David does at the beginning so I had to learn how to do that. A lot of gain and delay is required to make it sound smooth and spacey. The guitar solo and funk section were really fun to learn and have since been stuck in my head for months.

Another challenge for me was getting the vocals right. Although I've posted quite a few videos now of me singing, all of them were recorded after I had recorded this cover. So this was really my first proper attempt at singing. The next thing I had to learn was the bass. The most eagle-eyed amongst you will see that I'm playing a left handed bass upside down. This is my Dad's bass guitar and it's the only one we have. It's also the only bass guitar I've ever played so I'm used to playing it upside down. The bass track on this song is really fun to play, especially the funk section. The final part I recorded was the drum part and because I had listened to this song so much I didn't need more than 1 take. I bashed the two parts out in one go.

After everything was recorded I began mixing what would be the most challenge mix I've ever done. This song is incredibly long and there is so much going on all the time. There are really soft and quiet bits and then there are loud and heavily distorted guitar parts. Balancing everything and making each instrument sound clear but fit in with the song was a fun challenge.

This video was shot in 4K with a GoPro Hero 4 Black Edition and Panasonic Lumix G7. The sound was recorded and mixed in Cubase and the video was edited in Adobe Premiere. All of the videography was done by me. The extra cinematic shots were taken by me when on holiday in Rome, Prague and London.
