DJ DUTTY LAUNDRY

Ask anybody in the Tennessee area who's the number one mix tape DJ in the South and they will tell you without hesitation it's DJ Dutty Laundry the Game. For the past five years DJ Dutty Laundry has been dominating the mix tape and club scene in Tennessee and surrounding areas. His mix tapes series The Game and Hood Classics have been responsible for breaking numerous artists in the southern market.



"I broke Mr. Magic and Roy Jones "I Smoke, I Drank" on my CD series "The Game", says Dutty Laundry. "I broke Crime Mob "Knuck if you Buck". I was the first DJ in the country to play Gucci Mane's record, "So Icey. " My CDs actually gave a number of new artists their start in this market."



Dutty Laundry the Game is a native of Trinidad & Tobago, where as a youth he excelled in track and soccer. At the tender age of twelve Dutty Laundry became fascinated with the art of DJing. Like many youth at that age he didn't have a proper set of 1200s so he was forced to improvise by dubbing his favorite songs from cassette to cassette in order to come up with his own personalized compilation and sold them to his friends. "When I first started doing mix tapes I wasn't working off of turntables, I was using cassettes. I used to copy songs from the cassettes off of two of my favorite DJs, Dr. Hide and Chinese Laundry. That's how I started doing mix tapes."



At age twelve a chance meeting with local legend DJ Ishmael from the infamous Trinidadian crew the Downtown Outlaws inspired him to take the craft of DJing seriously. By then the aspiring DJ had amassed enough money from selling his homemade mix tapes to purchase a set of belt-driven turntables, much to the chagrin of his parents who would have preferred that he put his money toward educational means. But the young lad was hooked on the ideal of one day being the number one DJ and nothing was going to deter him from reaching his goal. Impressed by Dutty Laundry's dogged determination, DJ Ishmael took him under his wing and showed him the fundamentals of turntablism and made him an apprentice in the Downtown Outlaws.



After graduating from high school at age sixteen Dutty Laundry landed a track and soccer scholarship to St. John University. He moved to Willingboro, New Jersey to stay with his aunt and attend school. But things didn't go quite as plan. After a month his Aunt kicked him out the house. So Laundry move to New York city and learned to make do on a meager $85.00 a week. In New York, the Mecca for hip hop DJs, Dutty Laundry found himself infatuated with the nightlife. According him his bad behavior lost him his scholarship."



From there Dutty Laundry started running with the New York reggae crew Metro Media, who were in their early stages of development. He ran with Metro Media DJs until 2000, when he and his wife decided to move to her hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee. The move would ultimately change the course of his career for the better. A year later, he started doing down South mix tapes using the name Dutty Laundry, to give honor to his idol DJ Chinese Laundry. The last part of his name was given to him quite by accident.



"My first series was called The Game," recalls Dutty Laundry. "I started that series with the first and second half, but after the first one took off so I started doing The Game, 1st half, 2nd quarter, 2nd, half, 1st quarter and so forth. After I ran out of quarters I went into The Game: Over Time, The Game Sudden Death Overtime. I said that the Game sounded good on the drops. One day Roy Jones and Mr. Magic did a drop for me and they forgot to put a pause between my name and the game so it came out as one word, Dutty Laundry the Game. And I liked it so I stuck with it."



In addition to getting a new name Dutty Laundry the Game quickly established himself as one of the hottest club and mix tape DJs in the South. His current series Hood Classics is one of the best selling mix tapes in several States throughout the South, including Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky and Georgia. He is a member of the Hit Men DJs and serves as the Official DJ for recording artists Oohwee, Black Folk Inc, Krysis the Rhyme Don and The Tennessee Bad Boys. Dutty Laundry the Game also continues to be one of the more sought after DJs in the South by record labels both independent and major when it comes to breaking records in the Deep South.



Dutty Laundry has appeared in everything from the Ozone,Scratch, and Source magazines to BET's Rap City and MTV's Mixtape Mondays.
