Don is one of my biggest musical influences, along with Herbie. I am so amazed by Don's voice every time I hear him, but it's also the same with his piano playing. He clearly had all his chops down when he recorded this classic album, but what makes him stand apart from nearly every other pianist is how lyrical he is. Don sings through the piano man! What strikes me about Don's playing in this track, is how hip his voicings are - loads of bunched notes in the LH. It might sound like the piano chords I'm playing are 'lacking' something - that's because I've tried to play exactly what Don played on the piano, so it's lacking the response of the Rhodes, which echoes each piano chord. The piano solo on 'Holding You Loving You' is another classic - tantalisingly brief...! It sends shivers down my spine every time I hear this track! Anyway, I hope you enjoy this one for now; most importantly, listening to Don's album inspires me to keep trying to write my own music. Please go and support Don and the other great musicians he works with, by buying his work. *Everybody* should own a copy of his 1982 LP, whether it's on vinyl, CD or from iTunes!
