Gavin Mulhall under his Silinder pseudonym has been a model of consistency in the constantly changing world of music production. Since his early work remixing Chris Lake on Baroque and Paul Kieran alongside Coalesced for the now defunct Composure Records, to his brand new "Solas" EP for Proton, Silinder has always been at the forefront of the underground music scene. From his home in the Dublin capital, the Irishman has charted an impressive course that has seen him supported by James Zabiela and feature on a cover mounted CD for the UK's "DJ Mag" with a remix of Zabiela's "Robophobia". Over one hundred Beatport production credits later have seen Silinder feature on the globe's finest imprints in the form of Stripped, Balkan Connection and Sudbeat and supported by the DJ glitterarti from Charlie May and Hernan Cattaneo to John Digweed and Luke Porter. Equally, the Silinder production moniker has been no stranger to the Proton Music label. A remix of Lank's "Needless Solution" in 2011 was followed by two further remixes of Alexey Sonar and Biologik before the conceptual work of Mulhall's debut "Corrupt" EP brought abstract notions associated with Ireland's economic plight into sharp musical contrast around the twin tracks of "Penthouse" and "Pavement". Following on from this. and a full remix EP of the latter track, Proton Music is delighted to announce the next episode in the Silinder story with the brightly shining "Solas" EP. Opening with "A World is Watching", Silinder's "diverse range of musical influences" and production skill come to the fore. A beautifully deep and subtle rhythm section, full of off-beat percussive claps and toms, contrast against a shaking hi-hat section to produce a locked sultry and tribal groove against a deep brooding bass line. Simultaneously, layers of melodic textures in the form of sustained pads and melodic motifs sit lightly atop to provide an ominous and atmospheric journey. The "Solas" EP continues with "A Doomed Endeavour" in both club oriented flavour and Silinder's own downtempo "Lorenzo's Light Mix". Punctuated with the same deep late-night rhythmic groove of its predecessor, the original mix is a wonderful collage of subtle melodic interplay that builds effortlessly in intricate layers as an ethereal female vocal sample, soaked in reverb and delay, adds greater texture to a masterpiece of modern underground production. The "Lorenzo's Light" mix strips away the club oriented beat to leave light percussive elements and deep bass to shine a brighter light on the shimmering melodic riffs, and textures. A spine-tingling panoply of aural depth paves the way for an emotive listening experience that represents and individual at the height of his powers.
