About the Red Bull Thre3tyle:

Thre3style started in British Columbia, Canada in 2007 (Mat the Alien won the Vancouver round that year - which also included local heavyweights Flipout, P-Luv, Friktion, and Wax.

It proceeded to steadily grow into an international competition recognized worldwide for showcasing some of the best local party rockers in regional comps like this one, and then throwing an absolute banger of a party - the World Finals week held in whichever city is lucky enough to get picked. This year had 1000's of entries worldwide and the Finals were held in Toronto.


About my set:

I made edits of every track using Ableton Live - they were edited for good/even sound and given clean intro and outro bars for easy mixing. I grouped some early sets of 2-3 tracks as all 100bpm, 110bpm, and 116-118bpm and did drop mixes in between which allowed me to play pretty much at 'Zero Pitch' for the first 7 or 8 minutes. Then all hell breaks loose as I climb from 90bpm up to 140bpm and back.

I dropped a lot of tracks in on the right deck and then hit virtual doubles on the mixer to throw it over to the left deck and then mix in again on the right - that's not how I practiced it but up on stage the adrenaline kicked in and I seemed to gravitate to 'one arm bandit mode' lol. There were some rough spots (Xxplosive toneplay comes to mind) but overall I'm happy with my set.

I didn't make it through to the finals but I sure had a fun time rocking a set for this comp. With the help of a videographer I was able to have this video made to show my friends who couldn't make it out that night as well as for anyone out there interested to see it.

Also BIG props to the judges Skratch Bastid, Grandtheft, Hedspin, and Four Color Zack as well as Flipout who was the awesome MC for the event across Canada this year. And of course none of this would have ever gone down without Red Bull and specifically Kenny 'K-Mac' MacIntyre, who has put several years of hard work into this and turned it into what it is today: pure awesomeness.

For DJ's, 'Thre3style Week' is like Christmas is for kids - too much fun to handle.
