DESCRIPTION: Also known as "Funeral Chants" and "Mourning Songs", in Hungarian "Négy siratóének." Apparently based on material Bartok collected in Romania. Some commentators note the influence of Debussy, particularly at the end of the 2nd song; this of course is preposterous. The 3rd song is noteworthy in that it is built solely on a melodic doubling at the octave and harmonized in open fifths. Mr Bartok was a highly disciplined composer!
