Equal parts classic “BOOM BAP” hip-hop, dynamic visual art and high energy performance with an infusion of rock star attitude, the ambition to “Experience Music” served as the catalyst for the inception of The Diego Brown Project; a revolutionary hip-hop “MUSIC 2.O” venture aimed at stimulating sight and sound alike.
The Diego Brown Project is the teaming of celebrated underground lyricist, DJ and graffiti artist, Ricasshay, Proof of Life Entertainment co-founder, producer and emcee, C-Rey and visual & applied artist, (Mr)Arash. Growing up in the communities of Logan Heights and Chula Vista, childhood friends Ricasshay and C-Rey were introduced to hip-hop culture as teenagers. As Ricasshay recalls, “I remember around 89′ when we first heard groups like Boogie Down Productions and N.W.A… It was life changing.” Discussions of reuniting Diego Brown, a classic hip-hop group, culminated in 2009 with the addition of San Diego born (Mr)Arash, when the theoretic approach of evolving the definition of music to include design, photography, performance art and video was actualized between the three members.
The Diego Brown Project is instantly recognizable as a hip-hop music venture but the music is only the beginning. The beat, lyrics and delivery serve as the catalyst for photography, graphic design, visual art and performance art, all aspects of which are influenced by each other but can also be consumed independently.
Musically, The Diego Brown Project’s influences range from EPMD and Dilated Peoples to The Marley Family and Incubus. “Music 2.0″ revolves around the idea that music is not simply heard, but also experienced visually and physically. The sound of The Diego Brown Project is created from the ground up with visual art and photography already in mind.
