Demonic Voices with Parallel Processing - Video
PUBLISHED:  Oct 28, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
For Halloween 2016, we decided to change it up a bit.

In honor of the Halloween festivities, ADSR’s Stephen Ellestad takes you behind the scenes for an up close look at the process and techniques of cinematic and horror/fantasy sound design for a brand new experimental 360 Virtual Reality horror short, CIRCLE OF FRIENDS - an IMAGINATION UPGRADED Production, written and directed by Brandon ‘Champ’ Robinson.

Part Two of this series looks at using multiple parallel effects - both synth and processor - to build a powerful and complex monster voice straight from the darkest depths of Hell. Stephen discusses the concept of parallel routing, and the VFX setup, as well as why he chose that method for the demon voice.

Stephen explains and and then demonstrates how five characters can share one VFX chain, before he walks through the FX Chain setup, including extensive on screen instructions: the exact signal chain and processors used to create each aspect of this terrifying vocal persona. And if you don’t have all these specific tools and plugins, don’t worry about it these mix and sound design concepts work with many types of effects and synthesis tools.

INSTRUMENTS/PLUGINS USED:
Stephen demonstrates how to layer multiple copies of a plugin for different effects - using Isotope Vocal Synth for both a sinister Vocoder and a gut churning Sub Harmonic vocal part. Following up, Stephen adds motion and movement with a panning/tremolo modulation effect using the Rob Papen A-Mod Modulation FX processor, and finishes up with routing and setting up a Throw Delay Effect using Waves’ CLA Effects processor.
