It's hard not to make comparisons between the Band and the Deep Dark Woods. In the summer of 1968, the Band's debut, Music From Big Pink, sent shockwaves through the music world — not for its loud brash sound, but for its quiet restraint.
When Saskatoon's Deep Dark Woods hit the Canadian music scene in 2006, the feeling was much the same. This was a band that would occupy the quiet spaces in an over-the-top, volume-on-11 world. And much like the Band before them, the Deep Dark Woods' sound has developed into a louder, brasher version of itself.

But unlike the Band, whose heavier sound developed onstage, the Deep Dark Woods needed a solitary retreat to find theirs. Their new album, Jubilee, was recorded in a cabin near Bragg Creek, Alta. (A quick comparison of 2011's "The Place I Left Behind" and their latest single, "18th of December," will surely surprise you.)

The Deep Dark Woods dropped by CBC Music's Studio 211 for these exclusive live studio performances of music from Jubilee, set for release Oct. 1. In a quick couple of hours they banged off live-off-the-floor renditions of "18th of December," "Red, Red, Rose" and "Picture On My Wall."
