The Toronto debut of one of the most significant young bands in the Arab world, مشروع ليلى Mashrou' Leila is part of a wave of youthful fervor generated around the Arab Spring. Edgy, politically-charged lyrics and videos that cheerfully comment on the absurdity of life, supported by a sound that balances between lustfully intense and delicate, have won them a dedicated following well beyond the Middle East, where they play to thousands of joyful fans. Led by the powerful voice of lyricist Hamed Sinno, who's been called a 'Freddy Mercury doppelganger', the band has been embraced by Arab youth who see the music as part of a social revolution, responding to a positive social message addressing topics that are often taboo in conservative societies.
