Luis Milan: Pavana 6 David Tayler, lute (Luys Milán, Pavana VI) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Mar 29, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
The sixth pavan of Luys Milan, from El Maestro (Valencia, 1536), performed on the renaissance lute by David Tayler. Of all Milan's pieces, this pavan is the model of simplicity and elegance.
One of the most unusual features of this pavan is that it is written in triple meter: many interpretations are possible for the tempo. I have chosen to interpret the time signature as an indication of affect, since Milan had several terms that he used for tempo, and I have chosen an affect suitable for a pavan from the 1530s. The tempo is derived from a sesquialtera transformation of the pavan dance rhythm.
