NEA Jazz Master Dave Liebman & Grammy-winner Joe Lovano pay tribute to their hero — jazz icon John Coltrane. Recorded in 2007 for the BBC radio program Jazz on 3 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Coltrane’s passing, Compassion: The Music of John Coltrane features a stellar rhythm section with pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Ron McClure and drum legend Billy Hart. Now approaching the 50th anniversary of Coltrane’s passing, Compassion is a fitting tribute to his legacy with compositions covering each creative period of Coltrane’s life. The ‘early period’ is represented by the altered blues "Locomotion”; the ‘middle’ by the ethnic-influenced "Olé" and "Equinox"; and the ‘late’ represented by the rarely heard "Reverend King" and "Compassion" from the epic Meditations album. The deluxe CD includes a 24-page booklet of photos, essays by acclaimed jazz historian/author Ashley Kahn, producer Zev Feldman, and all the musicians on the album. The music explores Coltrane’s legacy with a modern coloristic approach.
