Dave Mills was born in 1935 in Berrington, close to Newcastle in England, to parents with an Irish heritage. At the age of 15 he started working in the coalmines and spent 10 years doing so. In his spare time he was a racing cyclist and at 19 started singing in pubs. At the age of 25 he married Jane Watson.

In 1969 he came to South Africa where Terry Dempsey signed him to the Storm label. He had his first big hit in this year with “Theresa”, penned by Terry Dempsey (as was all of his hit songs), and followed this up with “Love Is A Beautiful Song” in 1970. “Theresa” reached the number 2 spot on the South African Top 20 in 1969, charting for 20 weeks, with “Love Is A Beautiful Song” going to number 1 and charting for 17 weeks. He had another 5 songs that charted between 1970 and 1973. He also won a SARIE award in 1970 for Best Male Vocalist.

He moved to Australia towards the end of the 1970s, stays in Perth and still performed until recently.
